      Coppa Italia 1982-83

The tournament underwent a change in format and teams were now placed into groups of six in the initial round. Juventus coasted through this phase with an unbeaten record of three wins and two draws which saw them top a group comprising Milan, Catania, Pescara, Padova and Genoa.

The Bianconeri then edged out Bari 2-1 on aggregate to secure a spot in the last eight where they breezed past Roma 5-0 over two legs. However, Inter would present a different challenge come the semi-finals. Juve seemed firmly in control of the tie after establishing a two-goal advantage during the first leg in Turin but then Inter hit back in the closing stages to set up a tense affair at the San Siro. Juventus managed to emerge from the return leg in Milan unscathed as a goalless stalemate was enough to ensure safe passage through to the final.

Juventus’ unbeaten record of four draws and seven wins in the competition was brought to a swift end when they conceded either side of half-time and were condemned to a 2-0 first-leg defeat against Verona in the final at the Stadio Bentegodi. However, Rossi began the comeback trail by netting early on in the return fixture, then Platini found a the crucial equaliser with just nine minutes remaining of regulation time. Le Roi stepped up to the plate once again after a tense 29 minutes of extra-time by netting a magnificent winning goal on the 119 minute mark to seal a 7th Coppa Italia crown.
