26 November 1996, Tokyo, Juventus 1-0 River Plate.
After overcoming Ajax on penalties during the Champions League final in Rome, Juventus booked their tickets to Tokyo, where they would contest the Intercontinental Cup against River Plate, winners of the Copa Libertadores.
This was the Bianconeri’s third appearance in the competition following the defeat in 1973 and victory in 1985 against Argentinos Juniors. A tense encounter at Japan’s National Stadium was locked at a goalless stalemate for over 80 minutes but then Del Piero clinched the much coveted silverware when he fired a right-footed effort into the roof of the net with just nine minutes left on the clock.
Juventus starting XI – Peruzzi; Ferrara, Torricelli, Montero, Porrini; Di Livio, Deschamps, Jugovic, Zidane; Boksic, Del Piero.
