Cestmir Vycpalek added Zoff and Altafini to the ranks as he looked to reinforce his team during the summer transfer market in a bid to retain the Serie A crown and also mount a significant challenge in Europe’s most elite competition.

The Bianconeri got off to an indifferent start as they achieved just one victory in the opening seven league matches. However, summer arrival Altafini helped to restore title hopes by striking a rich vein of form in the following nine fixtures, netting six crucial goals and guiding Juve to eight wins.

However, the league trophy again seemed a distant hope on 8 April as Juventus had fallen five points behind the pace with just six games remaining. Vycpalek’s men won their next five encounters in a row to give themselves a fighting chance come the final matchday of the campaign.

Milan were firm favourites as they led the pack on 44 points, while Lazio and Juve were both trailing by one. The Bianconeri got a glimmer of hope as Verona were victorious against the Rossoneri and Lazio were held to a stalemate against Napoli. After going behind at the Stadio Olimpico against Roma, Juventus produced an inspired second-half comeback that would remain in the memory for many years to come. Altafini netted an equaliser on the hour mark and then Cuccureddu sparked scenes of ecstasy with his last-gasp winner just three minutes from time.

The achievement of back-to-back Scudetto titles was a joyous occasion for the Bianconeri but they would go on to suffer heartbreak in the coming months as they were denied a treble after stumbling in the finals of the Champions Cup and then the Coppa Italia.
