      Scudetto 1981-82

After a momentous title victory the previous season, Juve continued in the same winning vein at the start of the new campaign, following a 6-1 opening day win against Cesena with five more consecutive victories and propelling themselves firmly to the top of the table.

By January, Fiorentina had emerged as Juve’s most dangerous rivals, having just beaten Inter 2-1 to go top of the championship. The Viola and the Bianconeri continued to increase their distance from the other contenders as the season progressed, meaning that almost all rivals had fallen by the wayside by the start of the second half of the season.

The struggle between Fiorentina and Juve was gripping: they remained level until matchday 22, a crucial turning point: Juve were rampant away against the Giallorossi (3-0) while Fiorentina were held by Torino (2-2). The table was as follows: Juve 34, Fiorentina 33.

The encounter between the two could have extended the gap and made Juve unassailable, but the Viola were valiant and managed to hold the match to 0-0. Fiorentina then went on to take advantage of the Bianconeri’s draw against Ascoli and regain top spot with a win against Bologna.

With both sides level on 44 points going into the final stages, any slip up by either team would make the difference. And so it proved: the Viola couldn’t find a way past Cagliari, while a Liam Brady penalty was decisive in Juve’s game against Catanzaro. The Scudetto title was Juve’s once again.

Gaetano Scirea, Pietro Paolo Virdis and Dino Zoff hadn’t missed a single game, and Virdis, who had returned to the club in the summer and finished the season as its top striker, repaid the trust shown by the manager with a vital nine goals.
