The 26-year-old defender previews Sunday’s pivotal clash with Napoli: “We have the home advantage and we need to make the most of it. We’ve got the chance to pull ahead and catch up with Roma”

Leonardo Bonucci is fully aware of the importance of picking up where Juve left off against Real Madrid on Tuesday with another solid performance against Napoli on Sunday evening.

The upcoming encounter at Juventus Stadium will see two of the teams who have shot to the top of the pack in Serie A battle it out for the upper hand in the table on a night that will surely be one of the most decisive of the season.

Since Antonio Conte’s men are deadlocked with Rafa Benitez’s on 28 points each, a win in this direct fixture would be a great step forward, something that Bonucci acknowledged in an interview with Mediaset and Sky.

The 26-year-old defender said: “The league table shows it’s a key match for the Scudetto. Napoli, Roma and ourselves have opened up a gap over the others.

“Sunday evening’s game is important for us, we have the home advantage and we need to make the most of it. We’ve got the chance to pull ahead and catch up with Roma. The result in Florence has served as a catalyst to help us move forward.”

The two teams facing each other on Sunday both approach the game off the back of Champions League outings: while Napoli improved their chances of qualification for the knockout stages by beating Marseille 3-2, the Bianconeri produced a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid to keep their hopes of passage through Group B alive.

And Bonucci revealed that the excellent performance Juve produced against the Spaniards has given them confidence to go on to do the same in the two remaining games against FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

“We know that qualification is now in our hands and that if we play like we did in the two matches against Real our Champions League dream can continue. There’s no point feeling sorry for ourselves, we need to be focused on the task ahead.”
