Leonardo Bonucci has hailed today’s 3-1 win over Chievo Verona as an important step forward in Juventus’ hunt for a third consecutive Scudetto title.
Speaking to the media after the game, the 26-year old began: “We did well to find the net straight after conceding, and we’ve picked up three fundamental points in the title race.”
Bonucci, who topped the Bianconeri table of interceptions in this afternoon’s clash at Juventus Stadium, went on to reveal how the squad began the week by trying to right the wrongs of a frustrating 2-2 draw away at Hellas Verona.
“We studied the game together with the boss to see where we could improve. He wanted to do it the very next day, that’s his character after all: he wanted to make us understand the winning mentality required.”
This afternoon was Bonucci’s first time without both of the familiar presences of Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini, and he was quick to praise the defensive companions who battled alongside him today: “Martin and Angelo were prepared and in the right frame of mind just as anyone else is when they cross the white line. They were up to the challenge.”
The defender concluded by backing Antonio Conte’s public show of support for Sebastian Giovinco after the striker came in for criticism from certain sections of fans at Juventus Stadium.
“The manager’s gesture is a symbolic of the team’s attitude: we’re right behind Seba, who played a great game today. It’s understandable that he might be a bit upset, but he’s a great person, a great player and he’s shown that today on the pitch.”
