Giorgio Chiellini has hailed the significance of tonight’s win over Bologna which has given the Bianconeri welcome breathing space in the battle for the Scudetto.
Ahead of discovering how Roma fare against Fiorentina tonight, Juve are now 11 points clear at the top, and Chiellini classed tonight’s three points as potentially decisive with the end of the season now so imminent.
Speaking after the final whistle, the 29-year-old began: “It was an absolutely crucial victory. There are just four games left, and we’re now so close to the third consecutive Scudetto that we want at all costs.
“We’d like to thank Roma for keeping us on our toes, they deserve great applause. By staying so close, they’re helping us to enjoy this race, because having a 20 or 30-point advantage over them like we do over Napoli and Fiorentina wouldn’t have made this victory as sweet as it is.”
Antonio Conte’s men seemed in control throughout at Juventus Stadium tonight, but Bologna certainly didn’t lie down, becoming the latest visiting side to pack their own area and block any easy route through to goal.
And Chiellini concluded by going on to discuss the tactics of their latest hurdle overcome, a record 17th consecutive time the Bianconeri have risen to the challenge at home in the league this season.
“We just needed to step up the tempo. In the second half they didn’t leave their penalty area, and we had the edge.
“We knew that Bologna were an organised team. There weren’t a lot of spaces but the victory is well deserved!”
