After enthusiastically flying the Bianconeri flag Down Under at the official launch of Juventus’ summer exhibition match against the A-League All Stars in Sydney earlier in the week, Edgar Davids was back in Turin this evening to join the fans in watching the Derby della Mole at Juventus Stadium.
The Dutchman, hero of countless midfield battles during a famous seven-year spell in the black and white stripes, was so impressed with the fighting spirit shown by the current team that he began his post-match interview by joking: “The level of this team is so high that the Davids of times gone by wouldn’t even have been on the bench!”
Analysing what it is that makes Antonio Conte’s side such a force to be reckoned with, he continued with a word on the area of the pitch in which he used to ply his trade.
“There’s a great balance in this group: players like Vidal and Pogba make a fine contribution. But when you’re always in the opposition half like they are in games like this, it’s difficult because there’s no space. That’s why you have to be controlled in your play and move the ball more quickly.”
The legend’s final topic of discussion was tonight’s match-winner Carlos Tevez, of whom he spoke with a smile.
“When I first heard that he’d signed for Juve I was really happy. He’s one of football’s greats!”
