The Giovanissimi Nazionali saw their hopes of a quarter-final place dealt an initial setback with this afternoon’s last 16 first leg 2-1 defeat against Inter, but remain hopeful of settling scores in the return tie after a promising showing in Lombardy.
Claudio Gabetta’s youngsters, who found themselves two goals down after 55 minutes, showed plenty of character to get back into the affair and felt they should have emerged with at least a share of the spoils.
Speaking after the final whistle, Gabetta expressed his belief that there is still plenty to play for when both teams resume hostilities next Sunday in Vinovo at 15.00 CET.
He said: “I’ve praised the lads for today’s great performance. We’re bitter about the result, which was undeserved, but they did well and played with personality and determination.
“We must win on Sunday. We’ll prepare the game as best we can during the week. The tie’s still wide open, and we’ve got a great chance of winning in Turin.”
