Forty years ago, Dino Zoff saves a second-half penalty in a 1-0 Bianconeri win over Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris

The undeniable link between Juventus goalkeeping legends Gigi Buffon and Dino Zoff was strengthened even further last night by the current captain equalling his predecessor’s 476 games in the black and white stripes.

But tale of these two Bianconeri heroes has another intriguing twist to it. While Buffon was rightly accepting the plaudits for a penalty save which proved pivotal in grinding out a 1-0 victory over Genoa, Zoff had in fact pulled off a decisive stop of his own 40 years earlier at the same venue.

Another opponent denied from the spot at the Marassi, in another 1-0 success for the Bianconeri. Cestmyr Vycpalek was in the dugout that day, and Antonio Cuccureddu weighed in with what proved to be the match-winning strike on 12 minutes.

This lead, however, was put in jeopardy midway through the second half when Beppe Furino felled Roberto Pruzzo in the box. Up stepped Mario Corso, only for his spot kick to be thwarted by Zoff who, like Buffon, sprawled to his left to keep the ball from crossing the line.
