Costa Rica are playing in their fourth World Cup. They made their debut in Italia 90, where they also enjoyed their best run in the competition, going out in the last 16. On their other two appearances – in 2002 and 2006 – the Central American nation never came up against the Azzurri.
The only previous meeting between the two teams was linked to the World Cup. They met on 11 June 1994 as one of Italy's pre-tournament friendlies. On that day the Azzurri won narrowly thanks to a goal from Beppe Signori. Head coach Arrigo Sacchi picked two Juventus players: Roberto Baggio and his namesake Dino, who was replaced at half time by Roberto Donadoni.
There's also a touch of Juve in the current Costa Rica side, who go into tomorrow's game on the back of an impressive 3-1 win over Martin Caceres' Uruguay. One of their starters is Christian Bolaňos, the F.C. København midfielder who played the Bianconeri in the 2013/14 Champions League group stage. The player was taken off during the second half of both matches.
