Turin has hosted two previous international meetings between the nations

The city of Turin has played host to two previous international meetings between Italy and Czech Republic - then known as Czechoslovakia - over the course of history.

The first encounter, a 1-1 draw contested at the Motovelodromo in 1922, failed to feature any Bianconeri players, with the vast majority of the national team deriving from the two dominant sides of the time: Genoa and Luccese.

It was a different story four years later, however, as Juventus, fresh from their second title win and revolution under the presidency of Edoardo Agnelli, contributed four players to a comprehensive 3-1 victory: Gianpiero Combi, Virginio Rosetta, Umberto Caligaris and Carlo Bigatto.

Tonight’s clash at Juventus Stadium will be the first time both nations have met in a World Cup qualifier. The finals, on the other hand, saw Italy lift the Jules Rimet trophy after edging past Czechoslovakia in extra-time by a 2-1 scoreline.

The last time the two sides squared up was in 2006, when Gianluigi Buffon and Pavel Nedved went head-to-head in an epic battle. The midfielder was denied by his team-mate’s heroics between the posts on several occasions, with Marcello Lippi’s Azzurri eventually prevailing 2-0 to secure their place in the second round of the competition.
