Carlo Parola has entered the history books not just for his glorious record of triumphs with Juventus, but also because he pulled off one of the most famous moments of athleticism in Italian football history

The 1942 Coppa Italia title and two Scudetto victories in 1950 and 1952 during 338 appearances as a Juventus player, followed by the 1960 Coppa Italia and three further league titles in 1960, 1961 and 1975 during five more years as Bianconeri manager is an extraordinary record of victories that has seen Carlo Parola deservedly recognised as a Legend with a star at Juventus Stadium.

But beyond all the trophies, he is remembered for an even more celebrated moment; in fact, one of the most famous moments in the history of Italian football: a legendary overhead kick in the Fiorentina v Juventus match of 15 January 1950.

Born on this day in 1921 in Turin, Parola passed away in March 2000, but he has been immortalised by Carlo Bianchi’s photograph of a moment of perfect grace and athleticism in which Parola’s overhead kick stopped a pass from reaching Egisto Pandolfini in a dangerous position.

More than just showing how unusually blessed he was athletically, it also perfectly encapsulates his constant determination to prevent a goal, a trait which made him such an extraordinary defender and which means he will always be remembered by Juventus fans.
