Claudio Marchisio has said that tonight’s 3-1 win over Sassuolo, the latest deficit overturned in a campaign characterised by a series of crucial comebacks, epitomises the character and hunger for victory the Bianconeri have shown all season.
Speaking after the final whistle at the Mapei Stadium, Marchisio began: “It was difficult tonight because of the rain, the heavy pitch and the way Sassuolo caused us some problems in the first half. But we managed to win it, and this success reflects our season. We’ve shown great character and desire to reach our targets.”
The 28-year-old’s strike, which put the Bianconeri’s noses in front tonight, was volleyed home with calm confidence; the result, he went on to say, of receiving such an inviting assist from Andrea Pirlo.
“It was an important goal just like the ones Carlos and Fernando netted. But it’s also thanks to Pirlo’s ability to provide passes that are easy to stick home even on difficult pitches like this one.”
For now, Marchisio and his team-mates will rightly be celebrating another key step forward in their season. But from tomorrow onwards it’s full focus on Benfica’s visit to Juventus Stadium.
"We’ll enjoy this win but tomorrow we’ll focus immediately on the Europa League - a target that matters a great deal to us.
“Benfica will be tough, but even there on their own turf we showed that we’re on the up in Europe, so in front of our own fans at our own ground we’ll give it our all to take the game to them.”
