On 17 January 1996, Marcello Lippi’s Bianconeri add a new trophy to their cabinet thanks to a Gianluca Vialli tap-in against Parma at the Delle Alpi

Eighteen years ago today, on 17 January 1996, Marcello Lippi’s Juventus set a new precedent in the club’s history as they lifted the Italian Super Cup for the first time.

A Parma side including Fabio Cannavaro, Gianfranco Zola, Hristo Stoichkov and Faustino Asprilla provided strong opposition that night at the Stadio Delle Alpi, but in the end the goal that sealed victory for the reigning Scudetto holders couldn’t have been any more straightforward.

Gianluca Vialli appeared out of the thick fog in the right place at the right time as the ball fell to him less than a yard out, and his calm prod past Luca Bucci was enough to ensure Juventus emerged victorious despite the red card for Angelo Peruzzi that would arrive a few minutes later.

The trophy was at that point still in its infancy, created eight years previously by a group of friends around a table, and since lifting it for the first time in 1996 the Bianconeri have gone on to win it a further five times, the last of which being this season’s 4-0 triumph against Lazio.
