The Primavera have experienced a heartbreaking penalty shootout elimination from the Viareggio Cup this evening after their last 16 clash against Verona finished goalless after 90 minutes.
With the senior side having snatched a late equaliser against Antonio Conte’s men on Sunday, the Gialloblu came back to haunt the Bianconeri in even more frustrating fashion as the youngsters’ cup dreams came to an end at San Giuliano Terme’s Stadio Bui.
Injuries to Luca Barlocco and Alhassane Soumah complicated things for Primavera manager Andrea Zanchetta going into the game, but his side nonetheless came out of the blocks at a good tempo, playing especially well down the wings.
Goalkeeper Leonardo Citti was regularly forced into action before the half-time whistle blew, but after the break it was Juventus who began to heap on the pressure following a sending off to Godfred Donsah and the Gialloblu boss’ subsequent switch to a more defensive 4-4-1 formation.
The Bianconeri faithful were on their feet right at the death as Elvis Kabashi unleashed a dangerous shot, but the way in which his effort flew just inches wide was an indication that this was not to be Juve’s day.
With the game still deadlocked after 90 minutes, the passage to the quarter-finals of the completion would now be decided by penalties.
Filippo Romagna and Sergio Buenacasa were unable to convert the first two Bianconeri spot-kicks, but Verona didn’t falter, so it was the Gialloblu who booked their ticket to face Palermo in the next round.
