The Primavera’s defence of the Coppa Italia has begun in auspicious fashion with this afternoon’s 3-1 last 16 victory over Varese at Chisola.
Andrea Zanchetta’s side, who triumphed against Napoli in last year’s final, have now set up a mouth-watering derby clash with Torino in the quarter finals after a Bnou Marzouk double and a Joel Untersee goal lifted them to a comeback victory at Chisola.
Returning to a 3-5-2 formation, Zanchetta fielded a full-strength line-up for the knockout fixture against a side who had a number of older players in their ranks.
But despite inferior experience it was the Bianconeri, with five wins out of five at today’s venue in the league, whose confidence came to the fore first. Anastasios Donis struck the bar early on, with the visitors slow to get going.
It was Varese who opened the scoring, though, finding the net against the run of play through a long-range Luca Zamparo effort.
Juventus didn’t deserve to be behind, and they soon pulled off an equaliser as Untersee controlled on his chest and fired home, before Marzouk netted to send the hosts into half-time a goal to the good.
After the break, Juve continued to show nice touches on the ball and press hard when without it, and their efforts were rewarded when Marzouk scored his second after an unselfish pass from Jose Francisco Cevallos.
With the win in the bag, the Bianconeri now await Saturday 21 December’s match at home to Torino, when a place in the Coppa Italia semi-final will be up for grabs.
