Galatasaray got their Turkish Cup run off to a winning start with last night’s triumph over Gazientep, but had to rely on a nerve jangling penalty shootout to guarantee their place in the last 16.
All appeared to be going according to plan for the visitors when first Engin Baytar and then Nordin Amrabat fired them into a comfortable two-goal lead ahead of the break.
But the hosts rallied through second-half goals from Sinan Özkan and Serdar Deliktaş, sending the game to the lottery of spot kicks. Roberto Mancini’s men held their nerve to win 6-5 and wrap up a place in the next round, to be contested between Tuesday 17 and Thursday 19 December.
Over in Denmark, FC Copenhagen will be also be in domestic cup action when they do battle with Lyngby in tonight’s quarter-final. Stale Solbakken’s men will be hoping to replicate their strong league form in the domestic trophy, having bounced back from last week’s Champions League defeat to Juventus with a morale-boosting 3-1 win over historic rivals Brondby.
In Spain, Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid will line up in the Copa del Rey when they travel to Olimpic Xativa on Saturday night.
