A goalless draw at the neutral venue of Avellino, coupled with a 3-1 first leg victory, is enough to wrap up the Bianconeri’s second ever UEFA Cup success at the expense of Fiorentina

The Bianconeri’s one and only European meeting with Fiorentina outside of Turin came on 16 May 1990, when a goalless draw at the neutral venue of Avellino was enough to guarantee a 3-1 aggregate UEFA Cup final triumph.

A nervy introduction saw the Viola pile on the pressure as they attempted to find the two goals required to wrestle the tie back in their favour, with Stefano Tacconi making several interventions to keep them at bay.

The potential turning point came when Pasquale Bruno was handed his second yellow card for a foul on former Juventus midfielder Renato Buso, forcing the Bianconeri to face the remaining 32 minutes with a numerical disadvantage.

Yet Dino Zoff’s men, featuring Antonio Conte’s assistant manager Angelo Alessio in defence, maintained their concentration to secure their second ever UEFA Cup success, 13 years after Athletic Bilbao were overcome on away goals in Spain.
