Primavera coach Andrea Zanchetta says his side’s Coppa Italia quarter-final win over Torino will enable them to start the new year with increased belief.
After suffering a heartbreaking elimination from this season’s UEFA Youth League despite beating Galatasaray 5-0 in Istanbul, Zanchetta admitted his shell-shocked youngsters required a rapid response to raise spirits in the camp.
And the 2-1 success over their long standing inter-city rivals means confidence will be sky high when the Bianconeri return to action in 2014.
Speaking to JTV, Zanchetta began: “Winning a derby is always important for everyone. The Coppa Italia is one of our targets and beating Torino enables us to continue our run and go for it all the way.
“It’s a result we needed, also to shake off the after effects of the Youth League, a tournament I believe we were undeservedly eliminated from. We’ll start the new year with increased confidence, knowing that we need to keep growing as a team.”
With the Primavera firmly in the hunt for a spot in this term’s end of season playoffs and a Coppa Italia semi-final with Fiorentina on the horizon, Zanchetta will be calling on his newly-formed group to raise the bar after recovering from a tentative start to the campaign.
“This squad was assembled in the summer and didn’t have years of consolidation behind it, so it’s understandable that we had a few early difficulties. However, we still managed to reach an important target such as the Super Cup.
“Recently our good performances haven’t always been rewarded by the result. But what counts with youth players is improvement and ours has been considerable since the start of the season, something I’m very happy about.”
