Atletico Madrid warmed up for Tuesday night’s Champions League Group A final game against Juventus with a routine 2-0 away win over relegation-threatened Elche on Saturday evening, their fifth consecutive success in all competitions.

After a purposeful start by the hosts, Jose Maria Gimenez put the visitors on the way to three points by scoring against the run of play on 16 minutes, with Mario Mandzukic tucking the ball into the bottom corner for the eventual winner eight minutes after the break.

The win enables Atletico to stay four points adrift of pacesetters Madrid in second place, although Barcelona, who have a game in hand, sit just one point below Diego Simeone’s men.

Over in Greece, following last week’s derby defeat to PAOK, Olympiacos lost further ground on their rivals at the top after stumbling to a 2-2 draw at home against midtable side PAS Giannina.

Alexandros Michail shot the visitors into a shock lead on 25 minutes, before a second-half revival, inspired by Konstantinos Fortounis’ penalty and Pajtim Kasami’s strike, turned the game on its head.

However, with just two minutes of normal time remaining, the visitors fought back for a share of the spoils, Evripidis Giakos swooping to snatch a point at the death.

The result means Olympiacos, who host Malmo in their last Group A encounter on Tuesday evening, lie four points short of PAOK having played a game more.
