The Bianconeri suffer their first defeat of the season as Arda Turan’s second-half strike is enough for Atletico Madrid to register a 1-0 victory at the Vicente Calderon

Arda Turan’s close range finish 15 minutes from time ensured Massimiliano Allegri’s men would come away from the Vicente Calderon empty-handed after a tense encounter in Madrid.

Chances were few and far between throughout the contest with Gianluigi Buffon having to push away Mario Mandzukic’s long range effort in the first-half.

Juventus came out with more purpose after the interval, enjoying the lion’s share of possession, but were unable to break through a stubborn Atleti backline.

A telling period of pressure from the home side saw Turan prod home from Juanfran’s right wing cross with a quarter of an hour to be played. The Turkish international’s goal saw him become the first player to beat Buffon since team-mate Diego Godin at the 2014 World Cup.

We take a closer look at the stand-out numbers from Wednesday evening’s match-up:

      Three

Amount of crosses our wingbacks Stephan Lichtsteiner and Patrice Evra teased.

      Four

Number of tackles midfield dynamos Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal each won in the midfield battle, with the Chilean also registering the most amount of recoveries yesterday evening (11).

      11

Good long balls completed from Leonardo Bonucci and Claudio Marchisio.

      22

Passes made by Gigi Buffon, more than those attempted by eight of the home side’s players.

      64%

Amount of possession enjoyed by the Bianconeri last night, their second-highest percentage in the Champions League since 2003/04 (with the highest coming in matchday one against Malmo).

      108

Touches enjoyed by Giorgio Chiellini who also made the greatest amount of successful passes (79).
