Buffon: "We have to be bolder on the road"

This evening Gianluigi Buffon had to pick the ball out the back of his net for the first time since the season began. Quite an achievement given that we're now into October but unfortunately there was little to celebrate tonight as Arda Turan's finish also meant Juve slipped to their first defeat of 2014/15.

"It was very even out there," the captain told reporters after the Bianconeri's 1-0 reverse at the Vicente Calderon. "We didn't play badly by any means but we didn't create an awful lot over the 90 minutes either. A draw would have been a fair result. Sometimes, though, it only takes one small detail to tip the balance one way or the other."

The Italy goalkeeper felt Juve asked questions of the hosts and last season's Champions League runners-up: "Atletico are now up there with the European heavyweights. They're a solid outfit who know how to hurt you on the break. Today they were supposed to be the ones in control of things and yet they found it harder than usual."

If the Spanish champions struggled it was credit to Juventus, but that nonetheless converted into zero points come final whistle. Malmo's win elsewhere levels things up in the group, taking the edge off tonight's defeat somewhat, but Buffon didn't want to hear talk of other sides' results.

Asked for a comment on the Group A standings, he said: "We have to focus solely on ourselves. We need to look at where we can improve, especially when we go away. We'll work everything out at the end."

The Bianconeri have already played two big matches away from Juventus Stadium this season. "The Milan game was very different to this one," the Juve No.1 reflected. "Our approach was different in Milan. However, it has to be said that the level of the opposition was different too. Atletico have now taken their place among the European elite."

He concluded: "If there's an area where we need to improve I'd say we need to be a little bolder at times, even if that does mean taking a few more risks."
