Giorgio Chiellini acknowledges the Bianconeri were made to work for tonight’s success but ultimately chose to reflect on the delight of claiming three points against a determined Malmo outfit.
Speaking to reporters, the 30-year-old began: “It wasn’t easy tonight. Our previous experiences tell us that it’s always difficult to get off to a good start and win in Europe. We managed to do so and we’re happy with the triumph, Carlos’ double and clean sheet.”
The reigning champions of Sweden frustrated the hosts during a quiet first 45 minutes and Chiellini, making his first appearance of the season, revealed the half-time adjustments that led to an improved display after the break.
“Malmo put the whole team behind the ball and were very aggressive. Then we tweaked a couple of movements which managed to stretch them and release Carlos and Stephan.
“Now we’ve got two away games ahead of us, the most important of the group, which will have a big say on how we fare in the competition.”
