Monaco spurned the chance to close the gap on second-placed Lyon after they were held to a 1-1 draw by midtable Rennes in Monte Carlo on Saturday evening.

Leonardo Jardim’s men, who were looking for a strong display ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final return leg with Juventus, took the lead midway through the first half when Bernardo Silva slotted coolly past opposition goalkeeper Benoit Costil.

Chances came and went for the hosts as the game wore on, with Elderson and Anthony Martial unable to find the net with their efforts, before Ola Toivonen almost equalised only for Danijel Subasic to stand tall and make a smart stop.

But Rennes ultimately got their reward three minutes from time, as Habib Habibou tapped in from close range following Kamil Grosicki’s header across goal.

Tonight’s result sees Jardim’s troops remain in the third and final Champions League spot, two points ahead of nearest challengers Marseille who lost 1-0 at Nantes on Friday.
