Atletico stay within touching distance of early leaders Barcelona after their first ever away win over Almeria, while Malmo go eight points clear of second place following a triumph on the road at Halmstad

Atletico Madrid broke their Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos jinx by registering their first ever win in Almeria’s home ground at the fifth time of asking on Wednesday night.

Brazilian defender Miranda settled a tense affair when he headed home his third goal of the season on the hour, enabling Diego Simeone’s men to remain two points adrift of early La Liga leaders Barcelona.

In Sweden, a Pawel Cibicki goal after 16 minutes of play allowed Malmo to stretch their advantage at the top of the Allsvenskan to eight points with last night’s 1-0 victory over Halmstad.

The triumph puts further daylight between the reigning champions and this season’s closest challengers AIK, whose title challenge has been somewhat derailed in recent weeks by three straight defeats.

Such a run of form has allowed Elfsborg to climb up into second place as the season enters its final straight with five games remaining.
