It is exactly 25 years to the day that Gaetano Scirea, a World Cup winner and mainstay of the Juventus backline from 1974 to 1988, tragically died in Poland.
The sweeper’s career with the Bianconeri saw him win 14 trophies, including seven Serie A championships, two Coppa Italia titles and a European Cup (today known as the UEFA Champions League) before retiring from the game in 1988.
Immediately after announcing his retirement, the Old Lady employed Scirea as a scout and it was unfortunately while he was on duty that the fatal incident occurred.
‘Gai’ had travelled to Poland during the summer of 1989 to watch Gornik Zabrze, a future UEFA Cup opponent of the Bianconeri, when he was killed in a car accident.
Scirea’s Juventus legacy still lives on even 25 years after his death, and the professionalism, dedication and integrity he showed whilst at the club continues to set an example for us all.
Everyone at Juventus Football Club sends out messages of support to his family at this sad time.
