Andrea Agnelli believes Leonardo Bonucci’s contract extension represents a deserved reward for the defender’s development over the last five years.

The 28-year-old was the second signing made after the club president took up the reins in May 2010 and Bonucci’s individual stock has risen in tandem with the Bianconeri’s meteoric return to success.

Speaking to the media at Juventus Center, Agnelli expressed his delight at the way the central defender has blossomed into a star performer for both club and country and backed him to become an even more influential figure in the dressing room.

The president said: “Leo has been a part of absolutely everything at Juventus during the five years of my presidency. The first one was very difficult, but after that, we've experienced four seasons in which the results speak for themselves.

“I think we've all seen how Leo has grown in these five years. It's been a real pleasure, both for the success we've had in this period and for his development as a player and as a man.

“His next step needs to be to mature fully as a player, so he can take the team by the hand and help it achieve the results that we are all working towards every day. It will be great to see the way he helps the new talents coming through.”
