Fabio Grosso’s young guns go second in the league after cruising to a 4-0 victory over Sassuolo in Vinovo

Juventus’s Primavera were the big movers on Sunday, as they rose from fifth to second in the league after romping to a 4-0 win against Sassuolo in Vinovo.

As has been the custom in previous home matches this season, the Bianconeri burst quickly out of the traps with Grigoris Kastanos and Francesco Cassata both testing away keeper Brian Vassallo early on.

There was little Sassuolo’s stopper could do, however, about Luca Clemenza’s 25th minute penalty, awarded for handball. Having got their noses in front, the hosts were always intent on increasing their lead, going close through Roman Macek and Cassata before Clemenza set up Andrea Favilli for his side’s second of the match with just three minutes left of the first half.

The pattern of play scarcely changed after the interval, as Juve continued to control proceedings, although they would survive their biggest scare of the encounter on 78 minutes when Federico Abelli struck the crossbar.

Just four minutes later, Grosso’s charges wrapped up the points when Favilli too hit the bar with Clemenza at hand to tap in the rebound. Then, deep into injury time, Filippo Romagna collected the ball following Vassallo’s block on Stefano Pellini’s free-kick to bury home a fourth goal.

Speaking after the final whistle, a satisfied Grosso said: “I’m very happy with our performance. Once again our strength of mentality shone through, especially in the more difficult moments of the match.

“We might have stepped up another level early on in the second half, but I’m delighted with our general approach to this game, the way we often took the initiative, while showing strong technical qualities.”

The win sees Juventus leapfrog Sassuolo, Torino and Virtus Entella, as they move up to 16 points, four behind table-topping Fiorentina, who are their next opponents in the league on Saturday 21 November in Vinovo.
