Juventus Football Club remembers and celebrates the life of Gaetano Scirea, 26 years after his tragic death on 3 September 1989

Exactly 26 years to the day, Gaetano Scirea, one of football’s most respected statesmen and a Juventus Football Club legend, tragically lost his life in a road accident in Poland.

With a World Cup, seven Serie A titles and a European Cup to his name, Scirea conquered the hearts of Bianconeri fans and neutral observers alike for his glorious 14-year career in the black and white of Juventus as well as in the Azzurro of Italy.

"Gaetano was a living example of everything a sportsman should be: as a man and as an athlete."

    Hurrà Juventus Magazine October 1989

Having hung up his boots in 1988 on the back of a playing career that distinguished him as one of the greatest defenders of all time, Scirea immediately joined Juventus’ backroom staff as a scout.

A year later in September 1989, a fatal incident near the Polish town of Babsk, where he had been scouting the Bianconeri’s future UEFA Cup opponents, prematurely claimed the 36-year old Gaetano’s life.

Scirea’s professionalism, dedication and integrity continue to set an example for us all and the defender’s memory lives on 26 years later in the hearts and minds of all who came across him.

Everyone associated with Juventus Football Club sends out messages of support to his family at this sad time
