Claudio Marchisio stressed that the Bianconeri need to find greater consistency in their results after taking a point from Sunday’s showdown against Inter.

The draw follows wins against Bologna and Sevilla following last month’s reverse to Napoli in what has been a mixed start to 2015/16.

And the midfielder, making his first appearance since returning from injury, underlined the need to convert positive performances into points if they are to make up ground on their Serie A rivals.

Speaking moments after the final whistle at the San Siro, Marchisio began: “It’s a point earned, but when we look at the table we know that we don’t have much time to make up ground on our rivals.

“Apart from the match against Roma, the performances have been good this season but we’ve lacked consistency in our results.”

Marchisio played his first full 90 minutes of the campaign after returning from an adductor muscle tear and the 29-year-old said he was satisfied with his own display as well as that of his team-mates, whilst accepting that there are areas to build on.

“Tonight wasn’t the easiest of games to return to action. I’m still lacking a bit of match sharpness but am working hard every day to get back to peak condition.

“It crucial that we come away from the San Siro with at least a point. We managed to do that and we kept a clean sheet for the first time this season, which was also important. Unfortunately, however, we create plenty of chances without scoring.”

Wrapping up the interview, Marchisio said that the Bianconeri had an obligation to challenge until the very end for the Scudetto, despite sitting nine points adrift of top spot after eight matches.

“We’re the champions and we must do everything possible to defend our crown. We’re not giving up the fight for the title.”
