The secret of a mentality like the one shown by Juventus tonight perhaps lies in the post-match thoughts of Massimiliano Allegri, as he assessed his side’s performance.

“We could have played better, especially technically. Ultimately we didn’t manage possession well and had a few too many hairy moments from set-pieces.

“We’re in a good position and tonight’s win was important as it allows us to move seven points clear of Roma after a nice, well-fought match. I must congratulate all 22 players out there. Either way, there’s still a long way to go. I’m not interested in records; what matters is being top come the end of May.”

Tonight’s match featured a number of impressive individual performances, something Allegri was keen to stress: “[Daniele] Rugani played very well against [Edin] Dzeko and [Stefano] Sturaro was incredible, competing against top-class opposition. Matches like these are won in the 50-50 challenges too. I must say it’s wonderful to see not only my team’s improvement but also how much individual players have progressed because that’s how you get better as a unit.”

How is a mentality like Juve’s forged? “It’s something that runs through the club and it’s infectious but you have to put it across to the players that join the club. It’s crucial that everyone works hard and is willing to be flexible. You bounce back when you lose, never lose your heads and come through it - where possible - even stronger.”

Now to Doha: “We’ll go there in good shape but there’s no notion of revenge because there’s a trophy up for grabs. It’s about focus and the right mindset to have a happy Christmas.”
