Having watched his players clinch a last-gasp victory in Sunday’s friendly against West Ham, Massimiliano Allegri provided an even-handed appraisal of the team’s performance at London Stadium – one which presented plenty of positives going forwards, if also a few areas to improve on at the other end of the pitch, where the Hammers managed to net twice from crosses into the box.

“It was a good work out and we played well from a technical standpoint,” began Allegri. “We dropped off a bit after going two goals up and that’s when we conceded. Our reaction to going behind was a positive one and we might have scored our third before half-time.

“It was pleasing to see three of the frontmen get on the scoresheet this afternoon. In Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic, Simone Zaza and Gonzalo Higuain, we boast four top-class strikers plus there’s Marko Pjaca, who can play both as a forward and a midfielder.

“One aspect of our game, however, that we need to put right between now and the start of the campaign is that of tightening up at the back, as we have now conceded in all four of our pre-season friendlies.”

Rounding up his post-match interview, Allegri reserved praise for a number of men making their Bianconeri debuts today in the English capital.

“I’m satisfied to see the boys working well, even if we have two sets of players at different stages in their preparations.

He concluded: “The new players performed very solidly, but these are footballers of international quality so you expect them to hit the ground running.”
