A winning start, an opening day assist, a knack of important goals against certain clubs from the capital, a host of mouth-watering new additions to the squad: to the say the least, there was to be no lack of topics of conversation with Giorgio Chiellini this afternoon.

Discussing all of the above and more in front of the Sky and Mediaset cameras, the Juventus defender made it clear in no uncertain terms that the coming campaign had the potential to be the greatest yet for the reigning champions.

Chiello’s key quotes, beginning with early impressions of his new colleagues, are as follows:

Immediate Impact

“We’ve made some world-class signings. Juventus are always evolving and rightly so since the club is forever building for the future.

"The new arrivals have had a double-edged impact: firstly, they all want to prove that they can be successful at the club and, secondly, their arrivals have brought a breath of fresh air into the dressing room and can inspire us to achieve something truly spectacular.”

Peerless Pipita

“Our attacking options in particular now are very promising. Take Higuain for example, his input into the side has been huge after just one match and he is already a key part of the group. We all knew a bit about Gonzalo before he arrived and now we can see the full extent of his class in training every day.

“His movement and touch are incredible and his killer instinct in front of goal is second to none. It may seem strange to say this, but he can still improve: he is approaching his peak.”

Pjanic: a unique talent

“Exceptional technique, a devastating eye for a pass and deadly from set pieces: Miralem is a unique footballer.

"What’s more, he holds onto the ball so well, a quality which makes him ideal for any position in central midfield.”

Fighting on all fronts

“Focusing on the Champions League and neglecting Serie A would be foolish. Of course, everyone would love to eventually go all the way but that is much easier said than done; it is a truly unique competition that requires everything to go in your favour. For me, a strong and potentially legendary domestic campaign will only bolster our European ambitions.”

Opening day delight

“We’re pleased with the way we’ve kicked off the campaign, in difficult circumstances given the majority of the squad only returned a few weeks ago after international duty.

"We showed excellent character in spite of the errors we made to let Fiorentina back into the game. It took a great effort to ensure that we got the right result late on though after a superb first half.”

Saturday's trip to the capital

“We are in for another tough game; Lazio are starting to find their feet once more and the conditions will be hot and uncomfortable. An average performance won’t be enough on Saturday, we’ll need to be at our very best if we want to win.

“Along with Napoli, I’ve scored more goals against Lazio than any other team so let’s hope that run continues this weekend.”
