Stephan Lichtsteiner analyses this season’s epic charge to an historic fifth successive Serie A title

Stephan Lichtsteiner has only ever known Scudetto success since joining Juventus in 2011, but the left-back was in no mood to play down the scale of this season's historic feat of winning five league titles on the trot.

A few days after being able to take stock of the epic achievement, the Swiss Express set about analysing his side’s terrific fightback this term as well as their aims and aspirations in the cups during this afternoon’s interview with Sky and Mediaset.

      The season in stages

“It’s clear that in October we had a few doubts as to what we could achieve. Then we met altogether and spoke honestly to one another about our situation. We went on to recover following a tough start and from there we grew to recognise the strength of this group.

“Even when we were well into our winning streak, it wasn’t until those late victories away to Milan and Fiorentina that we finally felt like we were on the verge of lifting the Scudetto. By that point we were far more optimistic about our chances and now that we’ve done it we’re obviously very happy, as I can imagine you’ve already seen.”

      The challengers

“Our success over the years is mainly down to ourselves and our overall qualities in this team because there have always been creditable challengers for the title in Milan in the first year, then Roma and now Napoli. Next term I expect all three of them as well as Inter to be fighting towards the top.”

      European ambitions

“We’ve shown, after last season’s appearance in the Champions League final and this season’s contest with Bayern, that we’re a force to be reckoned with in Europe and I believe that we’re ready to win the competition. Of course, you need the rub of the green and a close attention to every detail during matches, as that’s ultimately what decides them.”

Raring to go for the run-in

“We’re Juventus and it’s in our nature to never let our intensity drop. We’ve a Coppa Italia to retain and three league matches to honour. Thinking of winning match after match was exactly our approach over the course of our fightback and that’s the way we’ll stay.”
