Allegri: “We must find balance in our game”

Massimiliano Allegri didn’t mince his words during post-match, when asked to explain his frustration at how his players managed the contest against SPAL tonight.

“If we play like we did tonight, we’ll walk away from San Siro empty-handed on Saturday,” began Allegri, who wasn’t satisfied with the four goals scored but wants to see a more clinical approach from his team.

“We’re still having peaks and troughs. Once again, we let our foot off the gas,” the head coach continued. “We were playing well until 2-0, but instead of continuing and increasing the tempo, we took our heads off the game and SPAL were wily enough to take the only chance they’d had so far.

“In the second half we risked conceding through [Alberto] Paloschi, and luckily the goal was offside. Either we realise that we have to find balance or we’ll constantly be on this seesaw. After going into a 2-0 lead, we made three errors, one after the other.

“We have to use the ball better and know when to speed the game up but also when to slow it down. We did well to kill the contest off after 20 minutes, but then we let them back into it.

“It’s one thing to feel confident, another to come across as arrogant,” Allegri concluded. “The latter must never happen. The lads have to understand that if we want to fight until the end for the league title.”
