“The league isn’t over yet. I’ll keep playing for as long as I can,” said the Italian defender after the win over Genoa

Andrea Barzagli pinpointed Juventus’ early goal against Genoa as the key to getting the three points at Juventus Stadium on Sunday night.

“It was important to start strongly tonight – we did well,” said the Italian defender. “It was a very psychological contest, but we channelled the buzz that’s been around the group over the last few days and did well to get an early goal and set us on our way. The league isn’t over yet, though – we have to make it mathematically certain.”

Barzagli – now 35 – insisted that he is determined to play on for as long as his body will allow.

“I’ll keep playing for as long as I can,” he said. “When somebody tells me I can’t do it anymore, I’ll think about calling it a day. Gigi Buffon is always telling me that!”

The defender had high praise for Mario Mandzukic, who worked his socks off and got himself a goal in the win.

“Mario really does run himself into the ground,” said Barzagli. “He puts so much effort in, both mentally and physically. He scored today too so we’re really pleased.”

Last but not least, Barzagli gave his take on Juve’s Champions League semi-final against Monaco.

“It’s true that Monaco might have less quality on paper than Real Madrid or Atletico, but it will be a very tricky match,” he explained. “They’re a young side, they have dangerous forwards and they play good, attacking football. As they said when the draw was made, they have nothing to lose. All semi-finals are dangerous and we never underestimate anyone – and we definitely won’t do for Monaco.”
