Friday 1 December may prove to be a key turning point in this season's title race and Gonzalo Higuain knows it.

The Argentine striker believes victory at the Stadio San Paolo – which saw Juventus close the gap with Napoli to a single point – can provide the forward momentum the Bianconeri need to go on and regain top spot, and ultimately a seventh straight Scudetto.

“We've beaten a top side, the league leaders, and moved up closer to them. Three points are still three points whether it's against Napoli or the bottom-placed side but we all know how important this one was tonight," he said.

“I think this is the start of a new phase of the season. We're right up there and hopefully this win can propel us forward and on to a seventh Scudetto.”

The three points came courtesy of Gonzalo's first-half strike, but more than the finish itself - he explained - it was the pass and control that enabled him to score.

“Paulo fed me a wonderful ball right to my feet but I think getting the first touch right was 70% of the work. Without that, I'd never have scored.”

And to think there was some doubt over whether El Pipita would even be available for the game...

“Together with the medical staff we decided the best thing was to operate. I want to thank them, my team-mates, the fans and the physiotherapists for sticking by me and helping me over the last few days.

"I hope to have repaid them all with this goal tonight."
