A look at the Bianconeri’s six UEFA competition matches played on Portuguese soil ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Sporting CP

    PORTO: 2001 & 2017

You only have to trace back eight months for the Bianconeri’s last trip to Portugal. On 22 February of this year, Juve travelled to the Estadio do Dragao for the first leg of their last 16 match against Porto.

The game will forever be remembered for the instant impacts of second-half substitutes, Marko Pjaca and Dani Alves, who both came off the bench to score in the 2-0 victory – a result that set up Massimiliano Allegri’s men very nicely for the second leg in Turin, where a 1-0 win secured their place in the quarter-finals.

Juve’s other trip to Porto – on 10 October 2001 – was less eventful, ending in a 0-0 draw, although the match did feature a series of standout saves from Gianluigi Buffon, who’d only joined the Bianconeri a few months earlier, to keep a clean sheet on the night.

    BENFICA: 1968, 1993, 2014

Two times out of three, Benfica triumphed in their two-legged ties against Juventus:

In 1968 (Champions League semi-final), the Bianconeri fell 2-0 in Lisbon to a fearsome side, spearheaded by Eusebio, who would find the net in the 69th minute of both legs. Benfica ran out 3-0 winners on aggregate.

Juve fared better in their UEFA Cup quarter-final in 1993, in which they overcame a 2-1 deficit from the first leg in Lisbon – Gianluca Vialli the goalscorer that night – with a comprehensive 3-0 victory in Turin thanks to strikes by Jurgen Kohler, Dino Baggio and Fabrizio Ravanelli.

The Bianconeri’s most recent trip to Lisbon came in 2014 for a Europa League semi-final match. Carlos Tevez’ goal was not enough to prevent Juve going down 2-1 to the Portuguese giants, who managed to hold on to their aggregate lead in the second leg to reach the final in Turin.

    MARITIMO: 1994

Fabrizio Ravanelli was the star of the show in Juve’s last-16 matches against Maritimo in October 1994.

The Italian striker followed up his winning goal in the first leg in the city of Funchal with a brace in Turin to secure a 3-1 aggregate victory for the Bianconeri.
