MASSIMILIANO ALLEGRI

“We played well for an hour and, although a 3-0 defeat is hard to take, until [Paolo] Dybala's sending off we did well.

“We could have avoided the first goal and the second came about after a mix-up between [Giorgio] Chiellini and [Gigi] Buffon, but everything went wrong for us tonight and we were up against an exceptional team.

“I can't fault my players at all: they playing against an amazing team and the best centre forward in the world, who has scored 14 goals in nine Champions League matches so far.

“We must bounce straight back now and focus solely on Serie A. I'm annoyed about the third goal we conceded. We should have kept it at 2-0 and tried to turn the tie around Madrid. That's now going to be extremely difficult.”

GIANLUIGI BUFFON

“We're all bitterly disappointed because we're unlikely to go though now, but when you play against top-level teams you have to be honest in your analysis of the game and give credit where it's due to your opponents.

“[Cristiano] Ronaldo is an extraordinary player – he and [Lionel] Messi have consistently led their teams to success. They're on a par with the likes of [Diego] Maradona and Pele. “

RODRIGO BENTANCUR

“After conceding the first goal, we still managed to play a good game, but the second strike was a tough blow. Dybala’s red card followed and that took the wind out of our sails. Now we’re focusing on the league and preparing for the return leg.”

ANDREA BARZAGLI

“Against a team like this one, we needed to be perfect and we were not. Maybe we deserved more, but then Ronaldo scored a goal that will live on for a long time. He has shown his quality time after time, scoring in many consecutive games. He’s deadly in the penalty area. The first goal? I’ll take responsibility. When you play against great champions, you can’t allow them any time or space.”
