Juventus legend of the 40s and 50s Carlo Parola returned to the club to take charge from the dugout and also made important summer purchases in the form of Damiani and Scirea.
After an opening day defeat to Bologna and a slightly sluggish start to the league campaign, the Bianconeri got the title challenge off and running with a five-game win streak. Napoli had managed to keep pace with Juventus at the top of the table but saw their Scudetto hopes dealt a significant blow during the first direct meeting between the sides at the Stadio San Paolo as they were handed a crushing 2-6 defeat on their home patch.
Over the following months, Parola’s men seemed to be coasting towards yet another league trophy but then a 3-2 loss against the Granata in the Turin derby on 31 March provided Napoli with a lifeline.
The following week was a pivotal moment in the championship season as just two points separated Juventus and the Partenopei before the two clubs locked horns at the Stadio Comunale. Just as the clash seemed destined to end as a stalemate, Altafini came off the bench and rose to the occasion by snatching the vital winning goal just two minutes from time.
This proved to be a crucial blow as Juve kept Napoli at arms’ length for the remainder of the campaign and coasted to a 16th Serie A crown.
