Scudetto 1997-98

Pippo Inzaghi and Edgar Davids arrived as reinforcements in the summer as Juventus looked to repeat their Scudetto winning success. The team now had a slightly different dynamic from the previous season: pace was the new focus of attack, with Inzaghi and Alessandro Del Piero forming a lethal partnership.

Though Marcello Lippi’s men dominated at home right from the beginning of the season, on the road they struggled to find their rhythm. Trips to Roma and Sampdoria ended in draws, and they couldn’t avoid defeat at the San Siro against Inter.

It seemed like it might be the year for the Nerazzuri, but Juve refused to give in, and five consecutive victories tipped the balance in the Bianconeri’s favour.

The fixture in Parma on 22 March proved decisive in the course of the season. The Gialloblu went 2-0 in front and Juve faced a tough challenge to get anything from the game, but goals from Inzaghi and Alessio Tacchinardi overturned the deficit and became a springboard to greater things.

Milan succumbed 4-1 with doubles from Del Piero and Inzaghi, Lazio were beaten by another Inzaghi winner, and Juve went on to dispatch Piacenza and Empoli.

The game against Inter had arrived, an all important match because the Nerazzurri were right on Juve’s tail. A goal from Del Piero eventually sealed victory in the game itself, and in doing so he secured the Scudetto title for Juventus.

With Zidane as the driving force in midfield, the Del Piero-Inzaghi partnership had devastated opponent defences. The pair scored 39 goals between them, and in doing so had won the Scudetto with only two losses throughout the whole campaign.
