Carrera: “We win as a team”

“We’re trying to get this idea across to the players. Many were away on international duty, that’s why we made changes. 3-1 win justifies our decision”

There were two sides to Juve as they overcame Genoa. Or perhaps it was simply that the Bianconeri only showed what they’re really made of in the second half. Whichever way you look at it, Massimo Carrera is savouring the win and the reaction of his men in adversity: “We knew this is a tough place to come, Genoa began the game very well and they caught us off-guard on a few occasions. In the second half we did well to raise the tempo and get the ball out wide more. Gigi kept us in the game with a great save from Bertolacci, then we did well to turn the game around.”

In the first half Juve hit a few stray passes at the back but this is understandable: “The long ball caused us some problems but there are still a number of players who aren't quite fully fit: Chiellini from his injury with the national team, Caceres is only recently back, De Ceglie hadn’t played in a long while...Pirlo? He struggled in the first half just as the whole team did, then in the second period he was able to set the tempo.”

The game changed thanks to the substitutions with Vucinic and Asamoah coming on: “In the week we had a good look at the players who started and given we won 3-1, we were right to do so. Vucinic was the difference? We all know how good Mirko is. He’d played for his national team and we wanted to rest him by starting with Matri. We had our minds on Genoa because we knew it would be a tough game and the first half showed that. Vucinic knows he’s an important player but he must earn his place like everyone else. We win as a team and not thanks to individuals and this is something we’re trying to get across to our players.”
