The midfield maestro reflects on the importance of a magnificent strike which downed a spirited Rossoblu side in the dying stages at the Marassi
Andrea Pirlo expressed his delight after securing the Bianconeri what could prove to be a crucial three points in the context of this season’s battle for Scudetto honours tonight in Genoa.
The midfielder stepped up to curl a magnificent free-kick home and finally tip the balance in the visitors' favour on a night where the Rossoblu, who saw an Emanuele Calaiò penalty saved by Gigi Buffon, might well have caused an upset.
But Pirlo believes the team were fully prepared for such a testing encounter, citing their battling spirit as one of the fundamental reasons behind the success.
Speaking to reporters after the game, the 34-year-old said: “We knew it was a difficult game. It was crucial to claim the three points. In spite of the difficulties we came up against, our spirit was always good. Let’s hope that the goal proves important in the Scudetto race.”
Looking ahead to Thursday’s Europa League return leg against Fiorentina, he added: “Motivation comes naturally for such a match. It’s a fundamental game for us to continue our European journey.”
