#JuveRoma, the statistics of a perfect start to 2014

Figures from last night’s 3-0 win at Juventus Stadium that kicked off the year in style reveal another tactical tour de force from Antonio Conte

With a resounding 3-0 rout of Roma last night, Juventus began 2014 in exactly the same victorious fashion as they ended the previous year.

Their achievements in Serie A this season are now stacking up in increasingly impressive fashion. With the Giallorossi vanquished, it’s nine league wins from nine at home, 49 points from an available 54 and ten wins on the trot for the Bianconeri (the latter a feat not managed since 1932).

Most importantly, last night’s victory put them eight points clear of Roma at the top of the Serie A table, a leap the statistics show the hosts acted very cleverly to achieve.

It was another tactical triumph from Antonio Conte, who left 59 per cent of the possession to the opposition but pounced in a second half that was taken full advantage of by his men.

Rudi Garcia’s side may have played 651 passes to Juve’s 447 and enjoyed a higher average territorial position overall, but they were left stung by ruthlessness in attack.

The deadly hosts converted three goals from five shots on target, an incredible return, as well as creating five further shooting opportunities more than Roma despite less time spent on the ball.

Andrea Pirlo made his presence felt in his timely return from injury, leading the Juventus passing charts with 55 completed, providing his first assist of the season for Leonardo Bonucci’s tap-in and jointly coming out on top in the shot count, firing in two along with Paul Pogba.

Arturo Vidal also shone in midfield, putting another goal past his preferred victims in Serie A as well as cementing himself as the most influential midfielder in the league this season: the 12 goals he has contributed to – eight goals and four assists – are more than any other player in his position.

In defence, meanwhile, Giorgio Chiellini celebrated making his 300th Bianconeri appearance in the best possible manner by leading the way with 21 recoveries of the ball.
