Juventus.com will continue to present the 50 Bianconeri legends whose names will be attached to the new stadium, chosen by the fans.
The Bianconeri have a rich tradition of successful Italian-Argentinean players, with the likes of Renato Cesarini, Luis Monti, Omar Sivori and Mauro German Camoranesi making important contributions at various different stages throughout the club’s history. Raimundo ‘Mumo’ Orsi, however, is the most celebrated of this exclusive group, following his moments of brilliance with the Quinquennio side.
Orsi was born in Avellaneda, to an Italian family, on 2nd December 1901. His first club was Independiente, and he spent the vast majority of the 1920s playing for Los Diablos Rojos. The striker’s impressive club performances, and silver medal win in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics attracted the attention of Juventus, who signed him shortly afterwards.
He wore the black and white stripes for the first time in 1929, following a year’s wait caused by international restrictions.
Orsi made 194 appearances in six fantastic seasons. The squad began to take shape in 1929/30, and did not have to wait long to hit a sensational run of form, bringing five successive titles to Torino. The striker, blessed with tremendous technical ability, was one of the key figures of the Quinquennio side and scored goals for fun: 77 in 177 championship games, 11 in 17 Central European International Cup fixtures.
His great qualities also saw the Italian Football Federation come calling. Raimundo was selected for the national side and repaid the trust shown in him by making a decisive contribution in the 1934 World Cup final. The striker hit a late equaliser against Czech Republic in Rome, before Schiavio netted the decisive winner in extra time.
Orsi returned to Argentina in 1935, where he continued to play for a few years along with spells in Uruguay and Brazil. He spent his last moments in Chile, passing away in Santiago on 6th April 1986.
