Andrea Agnelli believes this evening’s Super Cup triumph against Lazio will give the team an important injection of confidence with which to chase further glories over the course of the 2013/14 campaign.
Speaking at the Stadio Olimpico, the club president began: “It’s a comprehensive scoreline and getting off on the right foot was important. It’s a result that pleases us, because we know it will be a difficult year.”
The Bianconeri’s principal aim of the season is to attain a historic third successive title, a feat that has yet to be repeated since the days of the golden ‘Quinquennio’ side which registered five back-to-back victories between 1930 and 1935.
“In over 100 years of history, and in 90 years of association with my family, just one Juventus side has won three consecutive Scudetto titles – and that came back in the 1930s. It will therefore be important to remind everyone on a daily basis – players, staff in the main offices and those in Vinovo – that we must give 100 per cent and also a little bit extra in order to keep winning.”
Agnelli concluded by pointing out the club’s ambition to keep pushing forward in Europe, but was also quick to acknowledge the difficulty of negotiating the long road to Champions League success.
“We know we’ve earned the right to allow ourselves to dream, but we mustn’t delude anyone. We’ll have a look at the draw and try to get through the group stages. Then we’ll take things on a game by game basis, aware that there are many strong sides in Europe. If we think about one of these, Real Madrid, who have not won the Champions League since 2002, we can fully understand how difficult it is to achieve this target.”
