If Gigi Buffon’s 11 clean sheets have been crucial to Juve’s rise to their current eight-point lead over tonight’s vanquished opponents Roma in Serie A, then just as important is the contribution of Andrea Barzagli.
The Bianconeri couldn’t have let in so few goals without the ever-reliable presence of the 32-year-old defender, who was a rock once again this evening against the Giallorossi.
Barzagli began his post-match interview with praise for the team performance: “It was a difficult, hard-fought encounter. Roma have great players and caused us some problems, but we did really well to give so little away and make the most of the chances we created.”
He went on to reveal that Antonio Conte implemented a change in tactics for the big occasion, adapting the team’s style of play to limit the threat of the Giallorossi’s speed.
“We knew they were dangerous on the counter and opted to sit deeper to avoid getting caught by their pacey frontmen on the break.”
After tonight’s 3-0 victory, Juve now have their nearest challengers to a third Scudetto crown at arm’s length, but Barzagli concluded by insisting the team won’t be resting on their laurels.
“It’s perhaps best not to consider the table at the moment. We have a considerable advantage now, but there are too many games to be played and we mustn't let our guard down.”
