In a Q&A hosted by Cristina Chiabotto on Jtv’s Filo Diretto programme, Gigi Buffon has delighted the fans who sent in their questions for the Juve captain with confirmation of his desire to keep leading the team to further glory.
When asked what memory from his Bianconeri career has remained most firmly imprinted in his mind, he appeared to have no doubt that the support the fans showed him in a moment of uncharacteristic error at home to Lecce two years ago comes out on top: “The reaction of the fans at the time and in the following game was priceless.”
He went on to display the winning mentality he has showed time and time again since joining the club in 2001 when the danger of complacency after such a resounding 3-0 win against Roma was raised.
“We need to keep our foot on the accelerator now more than ever. I turn 36 on 28 January, but I’m still hungry for more.”
One ambition now at the forefront of his mind this season is to lift the Europa League Trophy in the final to be held at Juventus Stadium, something he believes would be “destiny if it happened".
For now, though, Buffon’s aim is to stay fit and maintain the consistency that has seen him successfully make 81.5 per cent of saves in Serie A so far this term, a higher rate than any other goalkeeper in Italy.
“Maintaining my physical fitness is key, but above all I hope to make sure I always deserve that number one shirt.”
