Gigi Buffon has rued the ability of Fiorentina’s danger men to strike out of the blue after a 79th-minute Mario Gomez finish forced Juventus to settle for just a 1-1 draw in this evening’s Europa League last 16 first leg.
In Sunday’s Serie A fixture, the Bianconeri managed to hold out for a 1-0 win after Kwadwo Asamoah had put them ahead in the first half, but this time out the German’s smart shot sent the game down a different course.
Speaking to Sky Italia after the final whistle, the captain began: “We thought the same approach as Sunday was the best way to go about keeping them at bay, but it doesn’t always work out. We were playing against a side with important individuals who can hurt you with just one move.”
The Viola’s goal came from the only truly clear-cut chance they managed to fashion, and Buffon conceded credit to Mario Gomez for the composure he showed in front of goal to dispatch it.
“They attacked the space in behind and Gomez netted. He’s a great player, and not someone who’s just burst on the scene.
“It’s a shame because we were hoping to pull off the same result as in the league, but there’s still all to play for.”
